Applying decoupage papers to your furniture can create truly unique pieces for your home.
Still Life Cabinet by Thirteen Furniture
Here at Thirteen Furniture we LOVE the MINT by Michelle range of decoupage papers. With over 100 designs to choose from there is something for everyone.
These papers were made with furniture refurbishment in mind and come in both A1 and A3 sizes which make them perfect for furniture upcycling.
How to apply your decoupage paper to your furniture
Firstly, you'll need to apply a base colour to your surface. You can use paint or primer for this. A coat of paint or primer will ensure an even coloured base to apply your decoupage paper to. With decoupage papers being slightly transparent, any variations with show through on the final design. A lighter colour will help to brighten the image, whilst a darker colour will create a more muted feel. Make sure this is thoroughly dry before applying your decoupage paper.
If you are applying your decoupage paper to a surface that is larger than your paper and you intend to blend in with paint you can tear the edges of your paper to soften the transition. It helps to dampen the edges of your paper before you tear.
Now you are ready to start to glue down your decoupage paper. For this I recommend using Annie Sloan's Image Medium.
Start by applying a small stripe of the Image Medium across the top of where your decoupage paper is going to go.
Attach your paper and smooth it down. You can use a soft brush or cloth for this but I love the MINT Felt Applicators.
Work down your piece applying the glue and smoothing down in manageable sections until the image is fully adhered to the surface.
Once you have done this I would recommend leaving to dry over night. Then you can go ahead and seal. Depending on the look you are going to you can seal with Annie Sloan's Image Medium or you can use a good protective varnish such as Polyvine.
I hope you enjoy creating with these beautiful papers. I'd love to see your creations so feel free to tag me on Social Media or email me some pictures.
